Hello, and welcome to Altenew’s September 2018 Washi Tape Release Blog Hop! If you came from the super talented Vicky Papaioannou’s blog, you are right on track.
To celebrate a release of new washi tapes, I created a set of mixed media holiday cards with matching envelopes featuring the stenciling technique.

Inspired by my card that I created last March, I decided to use the stencils and embossing paste again to highlight the floral elements from the washi tapes.
I started by mixing some Ranger Texture Paste and Tonic Nuvo Glimmer Paste and applying them over the Grid Stencil to partial areas of A2 size white cardstock. Then I let my panel air dry for about 15-20 minutes.
To add interest on my background, I added some splatters randomly over my panel using Altenew Ink Sprays: Antique Gold Metallic Ink Spray and Jet Black Ink Spray. I let the ink dry using my heat tool between each application to prevent from mixing the colors.
Then I adhered the sheet of Glitter Flurries Washi Tape on a piece of white cardstock and fussy cut the floral elements using my scissors, leaving some white areas around the edge of my images.
Next, I mounted my images on the card front using 3M foam tape to build my own floral arrangement. I also used Tonic Nuvo Crystal Glaze as 3M foam tape was not strong enough to attach my paper on the embossing paste.
I heat embossed the sentiment from Altenew’s Blessings Stamp Set using Pure White Embossing Powder on a piece of black cardstock. After cutting out my sentiment into a thin banner, I mounted it on the card front using 3M foam tape to finish off my card.
For my second card, I used the Painted Fantasy Washi Tape. You can definitely use this wide washi tape for creating a background for your A2 card as it’s big enough to cover the entire surface of A2 size panel.
However, using the floral elements from the washi tape is a great way to complete your card design even though it takes time to fussy cut out the elements with scissors.
To make your stenciled background more fun and organic, it’s important to make a random pattern, not a symmetry pattern. So don’t be afraid of applying your embossing paste randomly over your stencil.
You can also mix your embossing paste with coloring mediums like alcohol inks or watercolor paints to create your own colored embossing paste. You can go even further by applying the embossing powder over your texture pasted background and heat emboss it to create extra dimension and texture.
If you make a mistake, you can carefully remove the embossing paste with your finger. But once it dries, it’s hard to remove it, so you might need to use a craft knife instead.
It’s hard to see in the photo, but the background looks absolutely gorgeous in real life with all the shimmers from Tonic Nuvo Glimmer Paste.
I also applied the washi tape on the flap of my white envelope to create a matching envelope. So easy yet pretty!
Which card do you like the best? The purple floral card is a bit advanced as it takes more time to cut out all of the floral elements and arrange the clusters of the florals/leaves to build a floral arrangement. The Glitter Flurries Washi Tape is absolutely my favorite from Altenew September 2018 Washi Tape Release.
