Pomegranates Watercolor Card | Altenew September 2019 Stamp/Die/Stencil Release Blog Hop + Giveaway
Hello, and welcome to Altenew’s September 2019 Stamp/Die Release Blog Hop! If you came from the super talented Maryam Perez’s blog, you are right on track.
To celebrate a release of new stamps and dies, I created a watercolor card using the new Happy Pomegranates Stamp Set and Watercolor 36 Pan Set from Altenew.
I’ve always wanted to illustrate a stamp set with pomegranates to celebrate Autumn season and Thanksgiving Day! I designed this Happy Pomegranates Stamp Set for especially watercoloring in mind, so it was necessary to have large opening areas for coloring experiment.
I started by stamping the images from the Happy Pomegranates Stamp Set with Altenew Obsidian Pigment Ink on my A2 size Arches cold press watercolor paper.
I masked off some of my images along the way so that my medium-sized pomegranates appeared in the foreground while placing my small /large pomegrantes and leaves partially behind the main image.
After stamping, I watercolored my images using the Altenew Watercolor 36 Pan Set and Mijello Mission Gold 36 Watercolor Set. My go-to paintbrush size is #3 as it’s easy to add details while allowing me to cover the quite large areas as well. I think #3 or #4 round paintbrush should be good enough for painting images when you make an A2 size card project.
For my pomegranates, I coated a thin layer of light pigment first and applied darker colors on random areas to indicate the shading areas. I didn’t dry my previous layers when I added more colors just because I wanted my colors to blend together easily and create some unexpected color.
I also intentionally left some white areas to create intersting highlights.
Between my applications, I made sure to rinse off my paintbrush with clean water and wipe off the excess paint using a towel. That way I was able to control my colors better.
After my coloring was done, I added tiny dots on the center of some using a white gel pen to add interest. Next, I stamped the sentiment from Happy Pomegranates Stamp Set on the left bottom side of my card front with my favorite black ink which is Obsidian Pigment Ink.
Then I mounted it on the A2 size white top folding card base using double-sided tape. To finish off my card, I splattered the background with paints.
The beauty of my one layer watercolor card is an illusion of depth created by the masking technique. If you are not good at masking technique, I highly recommend that you test out your placement of each image by stamping the images on a A2 size scratch paper. That way you’ll know which image you should stamp first to place it in the foreground.
By the way, this was my first card that I created. I was happy with how my watercolor card turned out. But my husband kept saying that he is not a fan of my watercolor wash background. So I had to starte it over to create a card that my husband LOVES! 🙂 Anyway, I almost didn’t share this card, but my sweet friend Kathy Racoosin encouraged me to share.
Which card do you like? With watercolor wash background or without? Please leave a comment below. I’d love to hear from you.
