Hi, crafty friends! Today I have a messy(!) floral watercolor card to share with you all using the Watercolor Brush Markers and the Engraved Flowers Stamp Set from Altenew.
When it comes to watercoloring, I love to create a light and transparent look of watercolors by letting the water do most of the work. So I usually use lots of water and fewer pigments and try not to go over the same areas over and over to avoid heavy layers. (Check out my 10 Floral Watercolor Card Ideas post.)
For today’s card, my inspiration came from the one layer watercolor card that I created for the 5th-anniversary blog hop earlier this month. (To learn more about this card, click HERE.) This time I wanted to create a messy watercolor card with lots of layers and details.

I started by stamping the sentiments from the Smile More Stamp Set with black ink on the A2-sized Canson cold press watercolor paper. I chose this sentiment because I’m going to send this card to one of my friends who is going through tough times in her life.
Then I stamped the images from the Engraved Flowers Stamp Set with Permanent Black Crisp Ink which is waterproof. I masked off some of my images along the way so that my large flower is in the foreground while having small flowers and leaves partially behind the large flower. Masking technique is a great way to create an illusion of depth on a one layer card.
Next, I colored my images with Watercolor Brush Markers: Spring Garden, Winter Wonderland, and Tropical Fiesta. You can find detailed instruction on how to watercolor your images in my video.
FYI, here is the list of marker colors I used for my watercoloring:
- Flowers: Rouge, Crimson, Rubelite, Purple Wine, Midnight Violet, Warm Sunshine, Evening Gray, Lava Rock
- Leaves: Moss, Emerald, Warm Sunshine, Evening Gray, Paper Bag, Lava Rock
Usually, you can get a better result for light and transparent look of watercolors when you stay away from adding too many layers on your watercolor images. But I didn’t afraid of adding more layers and details this time as I really wanted to go crazy and get messy with my watercolors.
To add interest on my background, I splattered the background with some of the ink colors I used on my flowers and leaves. If you are not good at creating splatters, you could use a tip of your colored pen to add tiny dots. I finished off my card by adding some tiny dots and fine lines on my flowers using white watercolor paint.
