How-to Video | One-layer Floral Watercolor Card + $15 Altenew Gift Certificate Giveaway

Hi, crafty friends! Today I have a floral watercolor card to share with you all featuring the Watercolor 36 Pan Set and the Spring Daisy Stamp Set from Altenew.

I started by stamping the images from the Spring Daisy Stamp Set with Versafine Onyx Black Ink on the A2 size Arches cold press watercolor paper. I masked off a couple of images to create an illusion of the depth using 3M Post It Notes with full adhesive on the back.

After drying my stamped images with the heat tool, I colored them with Altenew Watercolor 36 Pan Set and the fine watercolor brush included in the set. I used the quick and easy watercoloring technique that anyone can do.

Once I picked up some Citrus Burst from my watercolor pan set with my watercolor brush, I applied the color for the base layer. I loosely watercolored each petal with less pigment and lots of water, leaving some white areas to indicate the highlights on the petals.

Then I brought in more color with Fresh Lemon which is one shade darker than the previous color. I applied Fresh Lemon toward the bottom of each petal and where two petals meet together to indicate the shading areas. Next, I went over the paint to diffuse the color using my watercolor brush by adding a bit of water to the paint.

Next, I colored my second flower with Cotton Candy for the first layer. Then I picked up Citrus Burst with my watercolor brush and applied the pigment toward the bottom of each petal. While the paper was still wet, I brought Coral Berry to add more color to my petals. 

I added some details and depth to my images by adding tiny dots using more pigment and less water toward the bottom of each petal and veins to indicate the shading areas. I also applied a hint of orange on my yellow flower using Sunkissed and a hint of yellow on my pink flower using Fresh Lemon to create some interest.

To bring attention to my colorful floral images, I colored my entire background using Industrial Diamond from Altenew Watercolor 36 Pan Set. After my coloring was done, I mounted my watercolor panel on the A2 sized top folding card base using double-sided tape. 

FYI, here is the list of the main paint colors I used for watercoloring:

• Pink flower: Cotton Candy, Coral Berry, Rubellite, Sunkissed
• Yellow flower: Citrus Burst, Fresh Lemon, Warm Sunshine
• Leaves: Forest Glades, Evergreen
• Background: Industrial Diamond

To add interest on my background, I splattered the background with Altenew ink sprays: Jet Black and Pure White after covering my images with post-it notes to protect them from the splatters. I also added some tiny dots by picking up the ink using a tip of my jewel picker. This is a great way to create a look of the controlled splatters if you are not good at creating splatters.  

I finished off my card by stamping the sentiment from the Smile More Stamp Set with Versafine Onyx Black Ink. There is no photo, but I also stamped the sentiment inside my card and another sentiment on the back of my card using my all time favorite stamp set which is Altenew’s Crafty Life Stamp Set.
