Video: How to Watercolor Lotus using Mijello Mission Gold Watercolors + Giveaway
Hi, crafty friends! Today I have a one layer watercolor card to share with you. I used the Altenew Lotus stamp set along with Mijello Mission Gold Watercolor Set to create a lotus pond scenery.
My inspiration came from the Altenew Inspiration Challenge that I’m hosting this month. I used the lotus photo as an inspiration that my older brother took in South Korea. Make sure to check out the Altenew blog to play along with the challenge – there are four $30 gift certificates up for grabs.
I tried to capture the colors in the photo, but it wasn’t easy at all. Each flower turned out differently as I spent more time on coloring the left flower compared to the other two flowers. I think I should have added more shading and details to the flower in the center of my card. What do you think?
I did some masking using post-it-note along the way to add some interest to my one layer card. The masking technique is a great way to create the illusion of depth as the image you stamp first is in the foreground and the second image is partially behind the first image.
Don’t you just love those paint splatters? I just love the beauty of randomness. I made a video tutorial to show you how to make this card from start to finish. You can watch it below or on YouTube channel.
How to Make a Watercolor Lotus Card using Mijello Mission Gold Watercolors
- Cut down Canson XL cold press watercolor paper slightly larger than A2 card size using Tim Holtz paper trimmer.
- Stamp the lotus and leaves from the Lotus stamp set on the watercolor paper with Versafine Onyx black ink.
- Color the images with Mijello Mission Gold watercolor set. (I created a gentle gradient by starting with intense colors first with less water and then using a paint brush wet with clean water to diffuse the color. If you make a mistake with your watercolors, you can fix it by adding some clean water on the paper and picking up the colors with the paper towel or paintbrush.)
- Cover the images with masks and add paint splatters over the background.
- Stamp the sentiment from the Build-A-Flower Camellia set with black ink.
- Mount the watercolor panel on the A2 sized folding card using double sided tape.

I am thankful for my darling dogs. Your card is lovely. I think you meant to say, “Lotus,” in the blog title, but it accidentally says, “Louts.” I don’t know how difficult it would be to go in and edit it, but I just thought you would want to know. Thanks!
