Happy Friday! Today I’m sharing my Quickfire card for the current Catered Crop Recipe Swap. This time we want to see you use fabric somewhere in your paper craft project.
When I found out this week’s theme, I immediately thought of my dear friend, Minki, who taught me how to do appliqués using a sewing machine. (FYI, applique is ornamentation, as a cutout design, that is sewn on to or otherwise applied to a piece of material according to Dictionary.com.) She is a sewing expert and appliqué artist as well, at least to me. You can find her incredible work here.
So I decided to make an appliqué card for the first time. I was remembering the other morning when it rained. It rarely rains here in Southern California, and I felt so blessed to have such a refreshing rainy day in May. I wanted to combine that feeling with the appliqué technique to create my project. That’s the reason I chose an umbrella as the focal image of my card.
Let me explain to you how I created my appliqué card. I started by hand-drawing an umbrella on a scrap paper. Then I cut the image into pieces along the lines, and used them as a template to guide how I cut the fabric. After cutting them, I glued the fabric pieces onto cardstock to make the umbrella shape. This added layer helped my card base and fabric to protect from tearing by sewing needle.
To appliqué directly onto the card base was not easy at all as I’d expected to be. I did some experimenting. When I stitched the fabric onto the paper, it cut out part of cardstock because of the very fine stitching. Then I found out I needed to mat the extra fabric under the cardstock to protect the paper.
As you see above, I used several kinds of fabric for the ferrule, canopy, and crook handle. I chose the colors and patterns for the canopy to reflect my feelings about rain. BTW, the embroidery floss for the shaft of the umbrella was held with one single stitch. After I finished the appliqué, I added some enamel dots from My Mind’s Eye over the umbrella to represent raindrops. Then I stamped the sentiment along one side of the umbrella to look like rain flowing down the canopy.
I’m more than happy with how it turned out. But I’m not sure whether the sentiment was stamped in the perfect place. What do you think? Hope you like my creation and get some inspiration.
