Summer Denim Shorts – Shaped Card

Good evening, all y’all! It’s the last day of July, and it means I have a few more hours left to submit my card to the July gallery challenge at Paper Crafts. I’ve been so frustrated about how to create a differently shaped card ever since I found out July challenge was going on Nina’s blog at the last minute. I couldn’t make it to the submission on her blog because I didn’t have enough time to finish it. Fortunately, I still have a chance to play along with a shaped card at the July gallery challenge.

I was working on iPhone and watermelon shaped cards over the last few days. An iPhone shaped card? Doesn’t it sound so cool? It did take me half a day though to realize it’s not always easy to create a real card even though I had a perfect idea. Plus, the challenge was supposed to make a summer themed card. Eventually the iPhone card didn’t work this time. Then I tried a watermelon shaped card, and I was discouraged after I found that some ladies had already uploaded a few types of watermelon cards on a Flickr gallery. I didn’t want to be the same or even similar to them. I’ve wanted something unique and different that nobody has tried yet.

Then I desperately started to search my house for something to give me an inspiration for summer. That’s how I came up with a denim shorts shaped card. For my sketch, I brought my jean shorts from the closet and put them on my work table, and then I drew the shape of the shorts on a white card stock. Next I inked it with ‘faded jeans’ distress ink and a blending tool. How lucky I am to have a similar color ink pad as my shorts!

Since it’s a card that you’re supposed to write something inside, I made a space for writing. Polka dot panties! After writing a message on panties, you can simply put it inside of the shorts. That’s how my shorts card works. The most challenging part of creating this card was stitching by hand. First, I poked holes with a needle along the lines, and then I stitched with brown thread. It took me almost one hour seriously. Whew… I really hope to get a sewing machine in the near future.

For the sentiment, I cut the paper with a Silhouette SD machine. Then I colored it with a Copic marker and put some Stickles glitter glue on the letters. Since my jeans shorts were kind of boring without any embellishments on them, I added some lace ribbons along the bottom. Do you think it’s more fashionable with girly lace?

For adding an extra bit of interest, I made a unique button with one dime coin and a fancy brad. Lastly, I put one ticket in the pocket. Do you know why I chose a ticket for the last embellishment? I enjoyed wearing my denim shorts a lot while my younger brother visited my place and travelled all over this month. Tickets! Amusement parks, shows, movies, trains and so on. It’s all about something fun, right? Oh, except traffic tickets! 😉 So this card reminds me of happy moments that I spent with my brother this summer.

I’m also entering this card into the Paper Play Time CH#80 and Make It Monday #103. I love the way my card turned out. It’s kind of funny, trendy and so sexy! Of course it would be hard to put in a regular sized envelope. Haha. 😉

Bon Appetit – Spaghetti Card

I can’t believe it’s almost Thursday! I’ve been having a tough time creating a card since I won the challenge at the CAS-ual Fridays last week. I felt a little pressure to meet your expectations about my next card. Here is my little confession, usually I’m not a creative person at all in my life. That’s why I like to get inspiration from others’ blogs and follow their layouts/designs on card making for my practice. That was who I was. But from now on, to be a more creative May, I’ll try to make my own cards often and then submit them to the challenge regularly. It’ll be one of my assignments every week.

 

So this week I was working on the CR84FN56 Color Challenge for days, and thankfully it turned out well with yummy pasta. You know what? Last night I even had a vivid dream about a perfect card design that really worked for this challenge. Of course I tried to make the card I dreamed about, and it didn’t look like my dream. Haha! That was just one night’s dream. 😉

So back to the challenge, we are supposed to play with the specific colors : yellow, gray, and neutral. Then I added one more color, brown, since I saw the cupcakes topped with dark chocolate in the photo above. Cupcakes? Suddenly that made me think of different types of food, when I was struggling with ideas for the color challenge. That’s the way I ended up with pasta in my card.

By the way, who doesn’t love spaghetti? Maybe my grandmother in Korea? But I’m sure it’s the all-time favorite of many of you girls including me. To satisfy my stomach, I often cook pasta for lunch. Usually my dish doesn’t look fancy, but this time I set the table beautifully in my card to give me a little treat. Just imagine! You are sitting by the table which is covered with a yellow-checkered tablecloth and about to eat delicious spaghetti on a white plate. I’m sure your mouth is already watering! Oh, I placed one herb leaf on top of the spaghetti at the last minute to make it more interesting.

Do you like how I decorate my lunch table? I had a hard time cutting the shape of a fork with scissors. So please don’t claim it doesn’t look like a dining fork. My favorite part of this card is how spaghetti pasta is served in a pattern on a white plate on a gray placemat. Thanks to baker’s twine from The Twinery, I got the result that I wanted. Doesn’t look like ready-to-eat pasta in front of you? Yum!

Finally I adhered the letters, Bon Appetit, cut with my Silhouette SD machine. Oh, I almost forgot to mention that I did hand-stitching along the edges of the yellow-patterned paper to give my card a fabric look. It’s definitely time-consuming but worthwhile.

Just Saying Hello-Polka Dots Card

Good evening, all y’all. It’s been a super busy week so far. Whew… Now I finally got back to my work table with CAS-ual Fridays challenge. Literally it would be my first challenge ever in my entire craft life. Can you hear my heart beating? I’m so thrilled and anxious at the same time to participate in this challenge for the first time.

This is the card that I made for the challenge and it took me two days. Yes, I said two days! CAS-ual Fridays challenge has a few rules to follow, and this week we are supposed to create a Clean and Simple project using polka dots. While I was working on this card, I realized how difficult a clean and simple card is to make. I thought a NOT Clean&Simple card would be much easier for me. Usually I’d love to put every stamping and embellishment all together onto the card, believing in more is better. But in this case, I should take off any embellishments which are not necessary. Less is more as long as it has polka dots in it. It’s still so difficult for me, though. That’s why we call it a CHALLENGE, right?

To make the card front, I used the Silhouette SD cutting machine for creating the polka-dotted background. Seriously, it was a time-consuming job to create the design that I wanted and cut neatly without messy parts. I wasted about 10 papers for just one sheet of polka dots circles. I have no idea why my Silhouette machine doesn’t work well at cutting papers cleanly even though it’s a still new one. Probably I’m not using it properly or following the manual. Maybe…

Back to the card: for sentiment, I did heat embossing with white powder and doodle-stitching with a white gel pen along the banner. Before I attached the banner with dimensional adhesive, I bent it smoothly with my fingertips to give it kind of a fun look, since this card seemed too simple at that time. After that, I made a fake stitching line with a tracing wheel which is my brand new tool.
