Hi crafty friends, welcome to the Watercolor Therapy Blog Hop. If you are coming from one of my favorite people Kristina Werner’s blog, you are right on track! Altenew is collaborating with the amazing Kathy Racoosin from The Daily Marker to inspire crafters to find joy through coloring during this difficult time. I’m so honored to be part of this fun blog hop.
Watercolor Therapy Blog Hop Project
To celebrate this collaboration blog hop, I created a simple(?) watercolor card using some of my favorite Altenew products. Here is the list of products I used for my card.
- Build-A-Flower: Canterbury Bells
- Across the Pond Stamp Set
- Artist Watercolor 24 Pan Set
- Metallic Watercolor 14 Pan Set
- Obsidian Pigment Ink
Watercolor Card Instructions
- I started by stamping the image from the Build-A-Flower: Canterbury Bells Stamp Set with Altenew Obsidian Pigment Ink on my A2 size Arches cold press watercolor paper.
- Then I diecut the stamped image using the Build-A-Flower: Canterbury Bells Die Set using Altenew Mini Blossom die cutting machine. (I suggest you die cut the image after watercoloring so you can rotate your watercolor paper easily without touching the watercolored areas.)
- Next, I colored my image using the Artist Watercolor 24 Pan Set and round watercolor paintbrush #2. I lightly coated the first layer with pigment after diluting it with water. Then I added the second layer with a darker color. I took some time to color each petal and didn’t do it quickly.
- After my coloring is done, I created a watercolor wash background on the A2 size watercolor paper and mounted it on the A2 size white top folding card base using double-sided tape. Then I splattered the background with green/purple paints from the Artist Watercolor 24 Pan Set and white paint from the Metallic Watercolor 14 Pan Set.
- I stamped the sentiment from the Across the Pond Stamp Set with Altenew Obsidian Pigment Ink on the left bottom side of my card front.
- Next, I mounted my watercolored die-cut piece on the card front using 3M foam tape.
- I fished off by adding a twine bow and attaching it on the stem with glue.
The artist-grade colors from the Artist Watercolor 24 Pan Set are intensely pigmented with little to no granulation, and blend beautifully. They made my watercoloring super fun and easy. Especially I really love how my watercolor wash background turned out after a few attempts. It looks so soft and smooth!
Who’s your crafting idol? One of my favorite cardmakers is the amazing Debby Hughes. She literally does magic with her hands. By the way, adding a twine bow on my card is not my usual go-to. But I see that Debby often finishes off her watercolor card with it so I wanted to give it a try. Hehe..

Actually I created my watercolor card during the craft retreat. Twice a year I see my friends at a craft retreat in Cincinnati, OH. Due to the current COVID-19 situations, we had to cancel our spring retreat and decided to meet virtually on Zoom instead. Our first virtual retreat happened last weekend and I had so much fun spending time with my friends for two days.
One of the challenges hosted by my friends, Lydia Fiedler and Libby Hickson, during the retreat was to create a card using watercolors and purple color. Let me be honest with you. Purple might be my least favorite color. I believe I have only a couple of clothes in purple in my closet.
However, the purple rain looked so beautiful on the challenge graphic. So I decided to get out of my comfort zone and I’m glad I did it.
I filmed a short clip of me waterocloring. I already posted this video on my Instagram Sotry, but I just wanted to share it here in case you missed watching it.
This is proof that I had so much fun crafting in my craft room last weekend. I made a BIG mess which I’m so proud of. I have 27 cards sitting on my craft desk now – I just need to add sentiment banners on my almost-finished cards. I’m planning to finish off this weekend. I can’t wait to send them in the mail to make someone’s day brighter.
