Video: Watercolor Iris Card using Mijello Mission Gold Watercolors
Hello, and welcome to the Altenew May 2017 Release Blog Hop! If you came from the amazing Joni Andaya’s blog, you are right on track! Today the design team girls and guests are sharing some fabulous projects to celebrate a release of stamps, dies, and embossing powders.
I created a one layer card featuring new stamp sets from Altenew: Enchanted Iris and Crafty Friends. These flowers are a delight to color with any medium, and I decided to color them with my favorite watercolors: Mijello Mission Gold watercolor set.
I’ve felt intimidated by no-line watercoloring for a while, and I accidentally tried no-line watercoloring for today’s project. You can watch my happy accident in my video tutorial below. 🙂
It took me about two hours to watercolor entire images. Of course I had so much fun watercoloring. Don’t you just love those paint splatters? I just love the beauty of randomness.
By the way, I made this card for my super talented friend, Debby Hughes. She taught me how to watercolor florals while we were on the craft retreat last month. Since then I became more confident with watercoloring.
I stamped the sentiments from the Crafty Friends stamp set. That’s exactly what I wanted to say to Debby.
Video
I made a video tutorial to show you how to create my card using the Enchanted Iris and Crafty Friends stamp sets. I’m also sharing an overview of Altenew’s new products and some watercoloring tips in the video you won’t want to miss. You can watch it below or on my YouTube channel:
Watercolor Card using Altenew Stamps and Mijello Mission Gold Watercolors
- Cut down Arches cold press watercolor paper slightly larger than A2 card size using Tim Holtz paper trimmer.
- Prep the watercolor paper with the EK Success Embossing Powder Tool to prevent any stray powder from sticking to unwanted areas.
- Stamp the flowers and leaves from the Enchanted Iris stamp set on the watercolor paper with Versamark Watermark Ink.
- Color the images with Mijello Mission Gold watercolor set. (I created a gentle gradient by starting with intense colors first with less water and then using a paint brush wet with clean water to diffuse the color. If you make a mistake with your watercolors, you can fix it by adding some clean water on the paper and picking up the colors with the paper towel or paintbrush.)
- Cover the images with scrap paper and add paint splatters over the background.
- Stamp the sentiments from the Crafty Friends stamp set with Altenew Crisp black ink.
- Mount the watercolor panel on the A2 sized folding card using double sided tape.
I also created a clean and simple card using the Layered Letters AFG stamp set. You can mix and match the letters and sentiments for endless possibilities.
I couldn’t stop playing with the Layered Letters AFG stamp set and ended up making more than 40 mini cards. Hehe..

Jul . 14 . 2017Project: Realistic Iris Card – Stamping
[…] May Park will show you how she used a no-line stamping technique and water colors to get this beautifully realistic looking Iris card. I love her tip of taping down your water color paper to preventing it from warping while you color! Visit her blog Mayholic Designs for her video tutorial. […]

I am really enjoying the theme/design of your website. Do you ever run into any browser compatibility issues? A couple of my blog readers have complained about my website not operating correctly in Explorer but looks great in Opera. Do you have any tip…

Your Iris is so pretty! It almost looks real! I love the colors! I didn’t realize you did it in water colors until I read it more carefully. I want to learn to do that. I have some beautiful watercolors that I love to use. I wasn’t so sure about the stamp set with the alphabet, I wasn’t sure if I liked it. However, I like what you did with it so I have decided I do like that set. Thanks for showing us all your cards and for giving us a chance to win something. I want that Iris stamp!
