Altenew Stencils & Ink Sprays Release Blog Hop + Giveaway | How-to Video
Hello, and welcome to the Altenew March 2017 Release Blog Hop! If you came from the amazing Svitlana’s blog, you are right on track!
Today the design team girls and guests are sharing some fabulous projects to celebrate the release of 7 stencils, 12 ink sprays, 12 colored cardstock, 7 envelopes and glue tape.
I’m not good at using stencils and ink sprays, but it was fun experimenting with new goodies. After a few practice pieces, I decided to do some stenciling with embossing paste and ink sprays. I created two cards with subtle ombre background using new stencils: Layered Medallion stencil A, Layered Medallion stencil B & new ink sprays: Frosty Pink, Warm Sunshine.
Using embossing paste with a stencil is a great way to add texture to your project. I used the ink spray to tint my embossing paste. Depending on how much ink you add to the embossing paste, you can adjust the color intensity. You can go further by adding other elements like glitter or embossing powder, if you want to.
If you don’t have embossing paste, you can make your own at home. Just google homemade embossing paste, you can easily find tons of recipes. I used to make my own embossing paste using baking soda and white acrylic paint. It worked almost the same.
I made a video tutorial to show you how to create my card. I share lots of tips you won’t want miss – you can watch it here or on my YouTube channel:
DIY Handmade Cards with Ombre Pasted Background using Stencils & Ink Sprays
- Place the Ranger craft mat on your desk. This mat has a slick surface so it’s easy to clean especially when you work with embossing paste. If you don’t have this mat, place the scrap paper on your work surface.
- Tape the Layered Medallion stencil A over 110lb Neenah solar white cardstock using washi tape to prevent the stencil from shifting when applying embossing paste.
- Pick up some Ranger Texture Paste with a spatula and mix it with Altenew Metallic Ink Spray Frost Pink after shaking it well. I used a teaspoon to measure the amount of ink. If you don’t like a shimmery look, you can use it without shaking. Depending on how much pigment you add to the embossing paste, you can adjust the color intensity
- Apply the colored embossing paste with the spatula over the stencil toward one direction. Make sure not to work too fast – otherwise, you may ruin your project as the embossing paste can smear under the stencil especially when you use the stencil which has a delicate design.
- Add more amount of Altenew Metallic Ink Spray Frost Pink to the embossing paste and apply it to below the first line of stenciled background. I used the same ink spray to create a subtle ombre background. If you want to create a background with more vibrant colors, you can switch to another color like orange or red. It’s up to you.
- Repeat the process until you complete the whole background, making sure to add more pigment along the way.
- After applying the third shade of pink color, go over all over the surface with the spatula to make it smooth.
- Set aside the stenciled panel and air dry for about a half hour before moving on the next step.
- Trim the panel into slightly smaller than A2 card size using Tim Holtz paper trimmer and mount it on an A2 size top folding card using 3M Foam Tape.
- Prep a piece of white cardstock with EK Success embossing powder tool to prevent any stray powder from sticking to unwanted areas. Stamp the word from Altenew Super Script stamp set with Versamak Watermark ink on the cardstock.
- Sprinkle Ranger super fine gold embossing powder over the stamped word and tap the excess powder off the cardstock. Use a small paint brush and tweezer to flick away any stray powder.
- Heat set the word with Hero Arts Embossing Gun until it’s completely melted.
- Die cut the word using Altenew Super Script die set and Spellbinders Platinum Diecut Machine.
- Heat emboss the sentiment from Altenew Halftone Circles stamp set with Ranger super fine white embossing powderon a piece of black cardstock.
- Adhere the die-cut word and a strip of sentiemnt on the card front using foam squares. Add some gold metallic thread behind the die-cut.
- Finish off the card with some Crystal Clear Sequins from Dress My Craft.

I love that shade of yellow. It’s perfect as it is so hard to find a good yellow color.
